Artist Statement

My paintings pull directly from the Madonna and Child works of Giovanni Bellini and his work shop. I am investigating the intertwined physical relationship between the two or more figures in the original work paralleled with the concept of devotion; each painting is not meant to be held in just one or the other.  Similar to the act of art making and devotional acts each painting is created over vast periods of thought, meditation and contemplation. Through contemplation my work moves past the use of the Northern Renaissance structure. The figures are rendered with no predisposition but that which honors the material and composition.  This allows new life to both the structure and concept. A new life that is in direct response to the limits found in the source and becomes inclusive to the world we live in.
